Seminar Title: Quantifying the Impact of Discipline-Based Professional Development on Undergraduate Geoscience Teaching
Abstract: Geoscience instructors who attended discipline-specific professional development (PD) are more often observed teaching Student-Centered classes (33% vs. 13%; p < 0.001), as measured by the Reformed Teaching Observation Protocol (RTOP). Additionally, instructors whose PD is topically-aligned with the content taught during the class observed teach using even more Student-Centered approaches (p < 0.0001). A similar impact is observed for instructors who have attended one PD event that is topically-aligned or two that are not.
