Seminar Title – Galápagos and the Plastic Problem: Impacts and Health Metrics on a Unique Vertebrate Fauna

Abstract – This seminar explores groundbreaking research that offers the first detailed insight into the intersection of wildlife health and plastic pollution in the Galápagos Islands. Using state-of-the-art health metrics and ecological assessments, the study reveals how pervasive plastic contamination from macro debris to microplastics is affecting some of the world’s most iconic vertebrate species, including marine iguanas, giant tortoises, and sea turtles. Findings underscore the urgent need for integrative conservation strategies in the face of mounting environmental threats.

Bio – Juan Pablo Muñoz-Pérez is an Ecuadorian living in the Galápagos with his family since the year 2000. He is currently a professor and research scientist at the USFQ-Galápagos campus. With 24 years of experience diving and surfing in the Galápagos, he has dedicated the past 13 years to research and teaching. His contributions include 58 academic outputs, one book, and over 100 presentations at research conferences. His research primarily focuses on animal movement and ecology–particularly sea turtles, marine iguanas, whales, and dolphins, while also exploring aspects of animal health. Since 2014, he has been a pioneer in studying plastic pollution in the Galápagos, aiming to involve science in the development of effective policy and solutions to this pressing issue.
