Seminar Title – For they have sown the wind, And they shall reap the whirlwind

Abstract – My Scholarly Reassignment during Fall 2024 was filled with both traditional faculty responsibilities and non-traditional activities. Along traditional lines, I will share results from a publication we prepared describing the cold pools of Southeastern U.S. squall lines from our groups’ recent field project, PERiLS. But, perhaps of greater general interest, I will also review the outcomes of a non-traditional Fall undertaking: a series of interviews with experts in the severe weather subdiscipline. What are the important things that have happened in our field recently? What are the most important emerging tools and ideas? How will our field continue to evolve in the short-to-medium term? What challenges is our field facing? I will share my impressions of the consensus that emerged from these many conversations, emphasizing the less arcane/more communal aspects as well as pathways forward for research in our group at NCSU. I also promise to include some AI-generated art for entertainment.
