Seminar Title:  Controlling Harmful Algal Blooms in Water Supply Reservoirs

Abstract:  Harmful algal blooms in water supply reservoirs are a major concern for utilities around the world. The effect of these blooms ranges from the formation of nuisance taste and odor compounds to legitimate concerns over human health with enhanced disinfection byproduct formation or cyanotoxin release into the drinking water. In an attempt to prevent harmful algal blooms many municipalities have considered a range of in-lake or near-lake control measures. Locally, in Jordan Lake, the state mandated a pilot program to explore the effect of in-lake solar-powered circulators for algal control. In this presentation, I will discuss a range of technologies proposed for algal bloom control and present some of the findings from our ongoing research related to the local use of lake-mixing technologies.
